Clutch when it counts; Sand Sharks weather GSW

BLUFFTON -- Smile and it will be a little more fun. That's what head coach Sharon Versyp said in her post-game conference following USCB's 72-69 overtime victory over Georogia Southwestern Saturday night inside the Cove.

Lydia Gattozzi posted a team-high 28 points leading the three Sand Sharks in double figures. Taniyah Bowman had 15 while Janiyah Heyward added 10. Beaufort were without regulars Brielle Bartelt and Madison Self, both out due to injury.

It was a tight game throughout the opening minutes as neither team took a large lead. Sheridan Bostic drained a triple with 3:08 on the clock to give USCB the lead and Gattozzi caught fire to open the second period scoring 11 of the Sand Sharks 13 points up to the media timeout. Beaufort held a 10-point lead after Heyward's free throw, and GSW scored with 22 seconds left to go into the break up eight.

Georgia Southwestern came out of the a 21-point third quarter and kept Beaufort to only 16 points. The Hurricanes outscored USCB in the fourth period as well but only by three. GSW held a small lead as the quarter came to a close but Heyward's basket and ensuing free thow tied the game at 64 and time expired.

In the OT period USCB put together a 4-0 lead with under three minutes remaining. The score was 68-66 with 2:14 left and GSW tied the game with a floater. The Canes took a one-point lead, but Bowman weaved through the defense and scored while drawing the foul. She got the old fashioned three-point play and Beaufort led 71-69 with 46 seconds left. Another free throw made gave the Sand Sharks a three-point lead and GSW chose not to foul with more than 15 seconds left allowing Beaufort to hang on to for the victory.

USCB hits the road next week for matchups against Georgia College and North Georgia. Wednesday's tipoff with the Bobcats is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Milledgeville.
