Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Brackin Lambert

Bartelt scores 20 in road loss to GCSU

MILLEDGEVILLE – It's a scene that the Sand Sharks have seen far too many times this season. Three quarters of beautiful play and one that is a struggle. It occurred again Wednesday night inside the Centennial Center where USCB's two-game win streak was snapped falling to the Georgia College Bobcats 68-61.

Brielle Bartelt put together her best performance of the year, scoring a game-high 20 points with three boards, two steals, and an assist. Two others were in double figures, Taniyah Bowman who scored 14 points and Brianna Pelote who scored 10.

The game was tied at 13-13 after the first quarter of play. GCSU jumped out to an early lead, but Bartelt's three-pointer knotted the game at nine. The teams exchanged buckets as the period ended.

USCB began the second quarter on a 14-2 run over six plus minutes and held a 10-point lead with the score 27-17 with under three and half to play. Led by Bartelt and Bowman's five points apiece, the Sand Sharks shot 70 percent from the field during the quarter and held an eight-point lead at the break. Beaufort outscored Georgia College 16-8 during the frame.

Bartelt scored the first five points for USCB in the second half. She converted the old-fashioned three-point play to start the quarter and followed it up with a reverse layup. The senior out of Watertown had the hot hand, draining her third triple of the contest to extend the lead to 15 for the Sand Sharks. Beaufort got into foul trouble midway through the period and Georgia College took advantage, cutting the lead down to single digits.

The Bobcats picked up the pressure defensively and made it a four-point game with 1:17 to play. Another score from GCSU made it 47-45 heading to the fourth. Following the fast start, the Sand Sharks scored only two points during a five-minute span while Georgia College had 14.

GCSU took its first lead since the score was 9-6 with a jumper to make it 49-47. The Bobcats went on an 11-4 run after taking the lead and it was seven-point advantage at the media timeout. Bartelt scored another three points the hard way to make it a four-point game, but Georgia College pushed the lead to eight with under 3:30 to play.

The Sand Sharks couldn't muster the same offensive attack as in earlier in the game and the Bobcats hung on for the seven-point win.

USCB's road trip continues, traveling to #10 North Georgia on Saturday. Tipoff with Nighthawks is slated for 1:30 p.m. in Dahlonega.
