Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brackin Lambert

Sand Sharks pull off the upset, defeat #22 Nighthawks

BLUFFTON -- Program defining wins are hard to come by but for USCB men's basketball that occured Saturday night inside the Cove. The Sand Sharks stunned No. 22 North Georgia in front of a electric crowd in the Lowcountry 83-80, running its winning streak to five games.

A monumental moment of the game happened when a goal tending call was reverse by the officials late in the second half. USCB had been in the midst of a 12-5 run that saw them recapture that lead that was once as large as nine in favor of UNG. After the reversal, the score was 75-72. North Georgia would tie the game back up at 78 with 46 seconds remaining. Hudson Norton's drive to the basket put Beaufort on top 80-78 and then he went 3-for-4 from the charity stripe to end the game. The Nighthawks twice had chances for a last second buzzer beater, but both times the baseball pass was intercepted by USCB.

Norton's damage came late in the second half as he scored 12 points, but had four players in double-figures led by Alejandro Ralat's 18. Kevaughn Price added 13 and Dominic Eason 10.

The score was tied through the first three and a half minutes of the opening, but the connection of Gaines and Lewis gave the Sand Sharks a 9-7 at the first media timeout. Nolan Paladugu drained a three-pointer from the corner to recapture USCB's lead. Through the first eight minutes there were five lead changes and four ties. Ralat hit a three-ball and picked off the ensuing pass that led to another Sand Shark bucket. The Nighthawks followed that up with a quick 8-0 run to claim a three-point advantage with eight minutes left in the half. Several more lead changes and ties occurred over the next five minutes with North Georgia grabbing a 30-28 lead. After 20 minutes, UNG led 37-35.

As the second half opened the Nighthawks claimed a five-point lead, but the Sand Sharks battled back to within two and tied the game with a thunderous two-handed slam dunk from Eason. Price drove to the basket and made the bucket while also drawing the foul, cutting the Nighthawks lead to four after reclaiming a two-score advance on consecutive makes. North Georgia pushed its lead to as large as nine, but USCB made the lead evaporate thanks to a 12-5 which included the overturned goal tending call.
