Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brackin Lambert

Down to final seconds, USCB stunned by Flagler

BLUFFTON -- At the start of the second half, one may have thought that USCB was going to take one on the chin, down 22 points. However, the resilient Sand Sharks fought back to erase the deficit and take the lead, but it was Flagler who had the last laugh, stunning a exhilarated crowd inside the Cove Saturday, converting the and-one with only six seconds remaining to claim a 84-83 victory.

Mason Manning's old school three-point play gave the Saints the one-point lead with only six seconds remaining and a miscommunication occurred as the ball was being brought up the court that ended up sealing the victory.

It's only the second time this season that USCB has lost with three players scoring in double-figures. The first being against fellow PBC member Augusta earlier this season. Dominic Eason and Kenney Gaines each scored 17 points and Alejandro Ralat added 16. The offense struggled mightily during the first half after having nearly five days off because of the winter storm that hit the Lowcountry earlier this week. The Sand Sharks converted just 6-of-34 shots in the first half. But Ron Fudala's potent offense found a different gear in the second half scoring 56 points and shooting over 50 percent from the field.

FC opened on a 9-2 run, but Tasso Sfannos connected a three ball to end the skid. The Sand Sharks were getting of plenty of open looks but couldn't get the basket to fall. The Saints kept the pressure and kept a double-digit lead with 13 minutes to play in the half. The lead continued to grow as the clock ticked down, getting to as large as 23-7 midway through the period.

USCB was ice-cold from the field, going just 3-of-25. Five of the Sand Sharks first 12 points came from the charity stripe.

Krishen Atwal's driving layup ended Beaufort's scoring drought and lazy defense allowed USCB to get into the double bonus with six minutes left in the half. Once the clock read zeroes the Sand Sharks faced unfamiliar territory being down 22 at the half.

An 8-1 run began the second half for the Sand Sharks getting it back to under 20. USCB's fast-paced offense found its gear and cut the lead to seven with 13 minutes to play. Sfannos connected on another three-pointer as the Saint's once 22-point lead had vanished. The Sand Sharks battled all the way back and took the lead for first time as Eason drove through the defense to make it 61-60.

Beaufort pushed its lead to 69-65 after Eason's jumper from the elbow and the close game continued as the clock winded down. A quick basket from Ralat and a steal from Gaines put all the momentum in USCB's corner. Flagler made it a two-point game with 48 seconds, but quickly fouled and sent Ralat to the line and the San Juan native was pure, increasing the lead to four.

Everything quickly changed on the next possession as Manning made the basket with nine seconds left and was fouled. He missed the free-throw attempt and USCB had a chance to secure the win with a rebound, but the ball ended up back in the hands of Manning who went up again and made the basket while also drawing the foul. This time the Saints guard connected on the free throw and on the ensuing inbound the Sand Sharks mishandled the ball and Ralat's three-point attemp fell short, giving Flagler the victory.

USCB is back on the road this week, first making a stop in Columbus for matchup with the 17th ranked Cougars. Tip-off in Columbus is set for 7:30 p.m.
