Offense explodes for 14; Sand Sharks take down SSU

HARDEEVILLE -- Powered by two sixth-run innings in both the sixth and eighth innings, USCB picked up midweek victory over visiting Savannah State 14-7 at the Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville Tuesday night.

Noah Campbell highlighted the box score going 5-for-5, scoring three runs and Carson Weathers' two-run blast in the eighth - the first of his career - drove in a career-high four runs. Third baseman Jake Tanner also had a multi-hit game, recording two hits and an RBI.

It was a Johnny Wholestaff afternoon for the Sand Sharks, using seven different pitchers. Ty Siksta got the nod as the opener, tossing two scoreless innings with two punchouts. Devin Marlow (1-0) picked up the win throwing two innings while allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout.

Nikko Andre put Beaufort on the board in the first with an RBI groundout. The game remained scoreless until the Tigers Hunter Bradshaw's sacrifice fly in the fourth. Andre's second RBI of the game put USCB on top in the sixth and the second of two balks in the inning made it 3-1. Tanner beat out an infield hit to score another run and back-to-back sac flies made it 7-1.

Savannah State tacked on two runs in the seventh, but the Sand Sharks got the run back on a wild pitch. SSU scored another three runs in the eighth, but Weather's home run followed by a Cooper McDaniel run scoring single made it a five-run game. Three unearned runs crossed to make it 14-6. The Tigers added a single run in the ninth, but Ian Barnes got two flies out and a punch out to secure the win.

USCB will spend the next month on the road, starting this weekend against Florida Southern on Friday.
