Men's Basketball late heroics not enough in OT loss to UNG

DAHLONEGA -- For the second straight game, USCB men's basketball went into overtime on the road. Unfortunately, this time the Sand Sharks' late magic couldn't muster a win, falling to North Georgia 96-90 Saturday night.

Five players scored in double figures, led by sophomore guard Tasso Sfanos' 21 points. Hudson Norton contributed 16 and Kenney Gaines 13. Kevaughn Price and Dominic Eason added 12 and 10 respectively.

USCB took a lead on the first possession of the game but UNG took the lead and held on to it throughout the first half. The Nighthawks twice held a nine-point lead but the Sand Sharks trimmed the lead down to three as the first half came to a close.

Krishen Atwal's triple at the 16:49 mark put Beaufort in the lead for the first time since the opening moments of the game. After Gaines drove through lane and laid one in, the Sand Sharks held a seven-point lead. It was then a back-and-forth affair for the remainder of regulation and the Nighthawks tied it at 80 with only seconds left. Zack Hawkinson had a chance to win it for North Georgia but the would be shot missed the mark.

Four consecutive made free throws put UNG up 84-80 and the Sand Sharks cut it down to a three-point game after Sfanos went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe, But it was AJ White's three-pointer from the top of the key that sent the dagger through USCB's heart, putting North Geogria up six. The Sand Sharks were forced to foul on the next few possessions and the Nighthawks earned the 96-90 victory.

USCB travels to rival USC Aiken on Monday to play in the makeup game from earlier in the season that was postponed due to the snow storm that struck the Lowcountry. Tipoff with the Pacers is set for 7:30 p.m. in Aiken.
