Sand Sharks fall to Pacers 81-71

AIKEN -- USCB men's basketball fell to rival USC Aiken Monday night by a score of 81-71 inside the USC Aiken Convention Center.

Kenney Gaines posted a team-high 10 points, Lukas Platauna added 11 and both Hudson Norton and Tasso Sfanos scored 10.

Aiken jumped out to a 10-2 lead after both squads scored their first two points from the charity stripe. Lewis' drive to the bucket and made free throw ended the run and cut the Pacer's lead in half. USCA pushed the pace over the next few minutes, pushing the score to 18-7 before Alejandro Ralat stopped the run with a three-ball from the corner.

The Sand Sharks defense started to cause problems for Aiken midway through the first half, but the Pacers scored on three straight possessions while denying USCB on the other to lead by 11 at the eight-minute media timeout. Beaufort slowly chipped into the lead and back-to-back triples from  Platauna and Kyle Polce made it 38-34 at the break.

USCB battled back to within three points and kept the score there for most of the second half. But Aiken forced key turnovers out of a media timeout and turned it into a five-point swing to take a 55-47 lead with 11 minutes left. Over the course of a two-minute span, Beaufort took its first lead of the night after Platauna's three-pointer rattled off and in. Jalen McCoy missed a chance to recapture the lead and the Sand Sharks regained possession with a one-point lead with just over eight minutes to play.

A quick couple of fouls against Beaufort allowed Aiken to take a five-point advantage and a turnover from Ralat lead to a slam dunk that put the Pacers up seven. USCA would hold on to the lead and hand USCB only its second two-game PBC losing streak of the season, winning 81-71.

The two teams have a quick turnaround, squaring off again on Wednesday inside the Cove. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Bluffton.
