Mission Complete; USCB wins in OT over rival Pacers

BLUFFTON -- Overtime, rivalry games. Seems like a regular occurrence inside the Cove when the Sand Sharks and Pacers face off. Similar to last year's matchup, the two teams had to play an extra five minutes to determine a winner, and it was USCB who came out on top, taking down rival USC Aiken 71-66 Wednesday night.

Brielle Bartelt led three Sand Sharks in double figures scoring 15 points with four rebounds and three assists while Taniyah Bowman finished with 14 points, three rebounds, steals, and assists. Lydia Gattozzi added 11 points and four boards.

USCB held a three-point lead at the first quarter media time out with the score 8-5. The Pacers battled back to take the lead on the following three possessions and held a two-point advantage as the period ended.

Beaufort struggled as the second quarter began missing its first five shots. Aiken took advantage and extended its lead to 23-14. Gattozzi ended the scoring drought with a driving layup while also drawing the foul. The junior guard was pure from the line, sparking an 11-5 run that knotted the game at 28. Bartelt's basket and Bowman's two free throws put USCB up 32-28 at the break.

Aiken scored early in the second half tying the game at 36 but a Madison Self's basket put the Sand Sharks back in front. USCA then went on a 6-0, one minute run to recapture a four-point lead. Beaufort tied the game after Gattozzi made went 1-for-2 from the line. Bartelt had a chance for the buzzer beat to end the quarter, but it bounced off the front of the rim and the game was tied at 44 after three quarters.

The teams exchanged the lead back and forth throughout the final period. Aiken held a three-point lead with a minute to play, but Bartelt knocked down both from the stripe to make it 58-57. Self was fouled after forcing a Pacers turnover. She knocked down one of two and Paris Webster was called for the offensive foul against Bowman. Bartelt drained a basket from the elbow, but Riley Simmons hit a turnaround jumper with 3 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

USCB took a three-point lead as Bartelt and Heyward connected on a fast break. The Sand Sharks defense kept Aiken to only a single point for four minutes. The Pacers fouled with under a minute to play, allowing Beaufort to take a five-point lead. Kendall Parker's three-pointer made it a two-point game, but Aiken fouled and USCB knocked down three of the next four from the free throw line to claim the OT victory over its rival.

The Sand Sharks travel down to St. Augustine, Florida to face off with Flalger on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. scheduled tip.
