BLUFFTON -- A late comeback for USCB was spoiled by #7 Columbus State, who swept the season series Wednesday night 83-72.
Having already secured their spot in the PBC Tournament, a win on Saturday's regular season finale will secure a home game during the first round of the playoffs. Losses from both Flagler and Lander will do the same.
Kenney Gaines posted a team-high 18 points while Tasso Sfanos added 12 points.
Columbus State jumped out to an early 8-0 lead before Nolan Paladugu's jumper put the Sand Sharks on the board. The Cougars though continued to extend the lead to 10 points only five minutes into the game. USCB used a short burst 7-3 run to cut it down to a three-point game and Gaines was pure from the charity stripe to tie the game at 18. CSU took the lead on Wisdom Uboh's three-pointer and then pushed the lead to 11 with 7:10 remaining in the half. Dominic Eason scored the final bucket of the half and it was a 15-point deficit for USCB after the first 20 minutes.
The No. 7 Cougars maintained a double digit lead for most of the second half until Alejandro Ralat drove to the basket to help cut into the lead. Sfano's three-ball made it a 61-56 with 10:04 to play as the momentum was starting to shift in favor of USCB. Another short burst from CSU pushed the lead back into double digits, but the Sand Sharks relentless offense cut it back down to a two-possession game after Sfanos' corner three. The rally wasn't enough though as the Cougars hung on for the win.
USCB wraps up the regular season on Saturday as the Sand Sharks welcome Augusta to the Cove for senior day. Festivities will happen prior to tipoff.
