Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brackin Lambert

Gaines leads comeback to stun Hurricanes

BLUFFTON -- Over the past few games a first half deficit has been something USCB men's basketball has had to overcome and it was no different Saturday night inside the Cove. Down by 18 at the start of the second half, the Sand Sharks battled all the way back to stun a Hurricanes team who led all the 38 minutes, 93-91 in front of a electric crowd.

It was Kenney Gaines night to play hero. The senior out of Lake City, Florida nine points in the final four minutes including the game-winning basket with only five seconds remaining; a reverse driving layup to seal the win. Gaines would finish with 15 points on the night. He was one of five Sand Sharks to score in double figures. Dominic Eason had a career-best night scoring 26 points. Hudson Norton continued his strong play adding 14 points off the bench while Kevaughn Price added 13. Tasso Sfanos rounded out the quintet of double-digit scorers with 11.

It was all Georgia Southwestern in the first half as the Hurricanes jumped out to an 11-point lead midway through the period. Beaufort made just nine field goals during the first half shooting 28 percent from the field. The Hurricanes were extremely efficient during the first 20 minutes shooting 60 percent from the field including a 50 percent clip from beyond the arc.

GSW maintained its double-figure lead throughout most of the second half and held a 17-point advantage with seven minutes left on the clock. Over the next three minutes USCB scored its next seven points from the charity stripe. Gaines then took control of the game. After cutting it to 88-81 with a layup he knocked down two free throws and Eason connected with a three-pointer making it a two-point game. Price's layup trimmed it to one and then Gaines followed with a jumper to tie the game at 91.

Norton's defensive board gave USCB the ball with the shot clock turned off and Gaines brought the ball up the court and dribbled through the defense before scoring the game-winning basket with a reverse layup with five seconds left. The Hurricanes had a chance to tie the game, but Spencer Rose's jumper missed the mark and the Sand Sharks stormed the court in celebration.

Beaufort hits the road for the next three contest beginning Wednesday against Georgia College and then North Georgia on Saturday. Tipoff with the Bobcats is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Milledgville.
