MILLEDGEVILLE -- USCB baseball struggled in Saturday's doubleheader, dropping both games to Georgia College at John Kurtz Field. Despite strong individual performances, the Sand Sharks were unable to generate enough offense to overcome the Bobcats, losing the opener by a score of 13-1 and game two by a margin of 10-2.
GAME ONE
The first game of the doubleheader proved to be a tough outing for Beaufort, as the offense was held to just four hits while the pitching staff struggled to contain Georgia College's lineup.
Outfielder Luke Doty provided a bright spot for the Sand Sharks, collecting two of the team's four hits and scoring their lone run. Noah Campbell and Carson Weathers each contributed a hit, while Jeremy Brown picked up the only RBI.
On the mound, Alex Simmons started and battled through 3.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on four hits and five walks while striking out two. Reliever Matt Navarro had a difficult outing, surrendering two runs in just one-third of an inning. The bullpen struggled collectively, issuing 10 walks and allowing 13 runs on seven hits.
In the top of the third, Doty set the tone for the inning, reaching base with a single to right field. Showing off his aggressive baserunning, Doty promptly stole second, putting himself in scoring position. After a groundout moved him to third, Brown stepped up to the plate with a chance to drive in a run. Beaufort's DH worked the count before grounding out to second base, allowing Doty to score putting USCB on the board.
GAME TWO
In the second game, the Sand Sharks showed more fight at the plate but could not keep pace with potent Georgia College offense.
Cooper McDaniel had a strong showing, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base. Jon Davis also made an impact, delivering three hits and an RBI. Campbell added a double, while Tanner Wagnon scored a run.
Starting pitcher Ian Barnes worked five innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits, two walks, and a home run. Ty Siksta and Braden Welch combined in relief but could not keep the Bobcats from extending their lead.
After five scoreless innings, USCB finally broke through in the sixth when McDaniel came around to score, putting the Sand Sharks on the board. In the ninth, Wagnon crossed the plate for USCB's second run, driven in by Davis.
Despite these efforts, the Sand Sharks struggled to capitalize on their baserunners, leaving 12 on base throughout the game.
USCB returns home for the first time in over a month to host Embry-Riddle Tuesday and Wednesday.
