Mitchell podiums, Sand Sharks start strong at first day of PBC Championships

DAYTONA BEACH -- The USCB track and field teams opened competition at the Peach Belt Conference Outdoor Championships with a strong showing on Monday, setting the tone for a promising weekend in Daytona Beach, hosted by Embry-Riddle.

At the conclusion of Day 1, the Sand Sharks sit in sixth place on the men's side and seventh on the women's side, buoyed by standout performances in both track and field events.

Leading the way was Sam Mitchell, who delivered the team's top finish of the day. Mitchell soared to a second-place result in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.08 meters, earning eight crucial points for USCB. Teammates Cam Edwards and Q France also contributed, with Edwards leaping 7.01 meters for fourth place and France reaching 6.71 meters to secure eighth.

In the sprint preliminaries, several Sand Sharks earned spots in Tuesday's finals. Mitchell continued his strong outing by qualifying for the 100-meter dash final, alongside teammate Bryson Shears. Zach Sellers also advanced, finishing second in the 400-meter dash prelims to position himself well for a podium run.

On the women's side, LeeAisha Ford and De'Andra Brown both advanced to the 100-meter hurdles final, with Ford holding the top qualifying time. Brown also leads the heptathlon heading into its final day, showcasing her versatility. Maggie Olsen demonstrated her range and endurance, qualifying for the finals in both the 400 meters and the 400-meter hurdles.

USCB also made its mark in the field events. Sophia Stalford chipped in a point for the women's team with a 35.38-meter throw in the hammer event. In the high jump, Kasey Thompson cleared 1.40 meters, adding 2.5 points to the team total.

With a strong foundation laid, the Sand Sharks are poised to climb the standings as they head into a pivotal Day 2 of competition. Finals in multiple events await, and USCB will look to turn early momentum into championship success at the PBC Outdoor Championships.
