Two gold medals, eight podiums as USCB wraps up season at PBC Championships

DAYTONA BEACH -- USCB track and field teams closed out the 2024-25 Peach Belt Conference Outdoor Championships in strong fashion on Tuesday, collecting two gold medals and eight total podium finishes to cap an impressive showing in Daytona Beach.

The Sand Sharks men's squad surged into fifth place in the team standings with 71 points, while the women's team finished eighth overall with 37.5 points in the competition hosted by Embry-Riddle.

Leading the charge for the men was the 4x100-meter relay team of Cornell Harris, Sam Mitchell, Zach Sellers, and Bryson Shears, who stormed to gold in a blistering time of 41.36 seconds. Shears wasn't done yet—he added a silver medal in the 100-meter dash (10.57) and picked up a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter (21.70), collecting crucial points along the way.

Mitchell, who capped off a breakout freshman campaign, finished fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.75, and Harris contributed another point for the Sand Sharks in the 200m (22.19). Sellers also chipped in with a fourth-place effort in the 400m, clocking a flat 49.00.

In the field, Cam Edwards soared to a silver medal in the triple jump with a leap of 14.15m, narrowly ahead of Mitchell, who added bronze with a 14.01m mark.

Devin Watson and Jason Jose made an impact in the discus, finishing sixth (41.01m) and seventh (39.49m), respectively. Watson also placed eighth in the shot put with a throw of 12.63m.

The women's team saw standout performances as well, led by De'Andra Brown, who claimed the gold in the heptathlon and added a scoring performance in the 100m hurdles (17.02). LeeAisha Ford joined her on the podium in that event, taking bronze in 15.06 seconds.

Maggie Olsen put in a strong double effort, finishing sixth in the 400m hurdles (1:02.58) and seventh in the 400m dash (1:08.86). Sophia Stalford placed sixth in the discus with a 33.73m throw.

Both women's relay squads contributed to the point total—Rivers, Brown, Ford, and Olsen placed fifth in the 4x100m relay (49.53), while the 4x400m relay team of Thompson, Ford, Olsen, and Rivers also earned a fifth-place finish with a time of 4:11.48.

Capping off the championship meet, Sam Mitchell was named PBC Freshman Field Athlete of the Year, highlighting a stellar individual showing in both jumps and sprints. Michael Johnson and Kasey Thompson were recognized for their sportsmanship, earning spots on the All-Sportsmanship Team.
