HARTSVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA – The Sand Sharks women's soccer team hit the road Sunday evening for a match against Coker University. The University of South Carolina Beaufort jumped out to an early lead with a goal in the first 10 minutes and never looked back, adding a second in the first half to secure a 2-0 shutout victory.
The win improves USCB to 2-0-0 on the season, marking the program's first 2-0 start since 2023.
"It was a great team win tonight, that came entirely from the work we did in training this week" stated head coach Gary Boughton. "We were able to take advantage of set pieces which can often be the difference in a game like this."
Goalkeeper Ciazia Powe recorded her first shutout of the season, finishing the match with one save. Kassi Martin and Savanna Page provided the offense, each scoring a goal, while Jasiah Pack and Sami Ruby tallied assists. The Sand Sharks out shot Coker 11-7 in the match.
Sand Sharks struck early in the 7th minute when Ruby set up Page, who buried her first goal of the season to give the Sand Sharks a 1-0 lead.
Roughly 11 minutes later, in the 18th minute, Martin extended the lead with a goal of her own off a setup from Pack, putting USCB ahead 2-0.
The Sand Sharks maintained their 2-0 advantage into the halftime break.
Powe faced her first shot on goal early in the second half, making a key save in the 48th minute to hold the shutout.
Coker followed with a corner kick and a shot attempt, but the Sand Shark defense held strong to preserve the shutout. Sand Sharks had five total shots on goal three coming in the second half but all were saved on the scoring attempts.
The 2-0 win marks the team's first shutout of the season and first since October 19th of last year.
