USCB Drops Series Finale against Augusta

HARDEEVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA – The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team closed out a three-game series against the Augusta Jaguars on Sunday afternoon. The Sand Sharks held a 5–3 lead before Augusta went ahead in the fourth inning and pulled away for a 15–6 victory over USCB.

The Sand Sharks fall to 3–9 overall and 0–6 in conference play, while Augusta improves to 10–5 overall with a 6–0 conference record.

USCB had four players record two hits each: Luke Doty, Mack Cromer, Noah Campbell, and Tyler Gundelfinger. Terry Dean led the team with a two-RBI afternoon. Cort Bringham and Garrett Helm each pitched a scoreless inning.

Augusta struck first Sunday after a single and a stolen base set up an RBI single up the middle for a 1–0 lead. USCB looked to answer in the bottom half of the inning as Raeder McIntire doubled to lead off, but back-to-back strikeouts kept the game at 1–0.

The Sand Sharks evened the game in the second inning when Campbell singled and later scored on a Gundelfinger RBI double to right-center field, tying the score at 1–1.

The Jaguars responded in the third inning with two runs. The first came home on a balk, and later an RBI single pushed Augusta back in front, 3–1.

USCB took its first lead of the game with a big third inning. McDaniel stole third before Andrew Walters delivered an RBI single through the left side. Cromer drove in his first run of the afternoon with an RBI single, and Dean followed with a two-RBI double to give the Sand Sharks a 5–3 advantage. USCB scored four runs on four hits in the inning.

Augusta answered in the fourth. Cowart reached on a fielder's choice, and later in the inning an RBI single gave the Jaguars a 6–5 lead.

McIntire reached safely to open the inning, and an RBI double by McDaniel tied the game at 6–6 through four innings.

After entering the fifth inning tied, the Jaguars regained the lead with a three-run frame on two doubles and a single to make it 9–6. Augusta followed with another three-run inning and scored in six consecutive innings to extend its lead to 15–6.

Augusta closed out the 15–6 win Sunday after the Sand Sharks put two runners on base in the ninth.

USCB returns home Tuesday afternoon, February 24, against Erskine College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
