HARDEEVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA – The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team opened a series against North Georgia on Friday evening, as the Nighthawks won the opening game of the series behind scoring in four straight innings, including a three-run fourth inning to take the lead, before closing out an 8-3 win over the Sand Sharks.
North Georgia improves to 21-5 on the season with a 12-1 conference record. USCB is now 4-18 with an 0-13 conference record.
The USCB offense was led in hits by Noah Campbell and Andrew Walters with two each. Luke Doty had a team-high two RBIs in the game while also hitting a home run. Joe Turner struck out four in his 5.2 innings of work. Carson Tillotson, Asher Western, and Braden Welch all combined for scoreless outings.
Friday's game was all pitching to start, as neither team had a hit until the bottom of the third inning when Terry Dean recorded the game's first hit.
North Georgia struck first after recording its first hit in the fourth inning. A single and a stolen base led to an RBI double for the 1-0 lead. An RBI single followed later in the inning after a wild pitch moved a runner into scoring position, and a second RBI single pushed the Nighthawks in front 3-0.
Luke Doty helped the Sand Sharks get a run back in the fourth inning, leading off the frame with a solo home run as USCB trailed 3-1. Walters followed with a single before a walk put two runners on base, but North Georgia worked around further damage.
North Georgia added to its lead in the fifth inning as, with runners on second and third, a two-RBI single scored two runs and gave the Nighthawks a 5-1 lead.
USCB answered with two runs in the home half of the fifth inning as Doty hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Dean, before Andrew Walters delivered an RBI single that scored Campbell as the Sand Sharks trailed 5-3.
In the sixth inning, North Georgia put two runners on base before an RBI single scored the sixth run of the game. The Nighthawks added two more in the seventh inning as a throwing error helped push across two more runs and make the game 8-3 through seven innings.
One of the big highlights from the night for the Sand Sharks came in the top of the ninth inning. After a walk and a single put two runners on base, USCB turned a triple play started by Campbell to Jon Davis to Tyler Gundelfinger to end the inning.
The Sand Sharks had two runners on in the ninth inning, but North Georgia worked around the jam to close out the 8-3 win.
USCB continues the series on Saturday against North Georgia with game two of the three-game series, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
