HARDEEVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA – The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team opened a three-game series against the USCA Pacers on Friday. The Pacers used a fast start, scoring in each of the first seven innings, before closing out a 14–8 win over the Sand Sharks in the series opener.
The Sand Sharks' offense was led by Terry Dean, who finished with four hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Mack Cromer and Cooper McDaniel each recorded two RBIs as well. Luke Doty and McDaniel both added two hits in the contest.
In the opening inning, the Pacers struck first. A leadoff double later came around to score on back-to-back doubles. The Sand Sharks recorded their first out when Dean threw out a runner attempting to steal.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Sand Sharks looked to respond, loading the bases with a single, but the Pacers worked out of the jam to maintain a 1–0 lead.
After two quick outs in the second, USCA extended the inning with a single and a walk. A double steal set up a two-RBI single to center field, pushing the lead to 3–0. An RBI double followed by an RBI single gave the Pacers a 5–0 advantage through two innings.
USCB's deficit grew to 9–0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, when the offense came alive. After loading the bases, Cromer drew an RBI walk to bring in the first run. An Aiken error allowed two more runs to score, and McDaniel added a two-RBI single, capping a five-run inning and cutting the deficit to 9–5.
USCA answered in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly and a run scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 11–5. The deficit grew to seven before the Sand Sharks responded again in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to center field, making it 12–6.
The Pacers added two more runs to take a 14–6 lead. In the seventh, Cromer drove in Tanner Wagnon with an RBI single to make it 14–7. USCB added one more run in the eighth inning when Tyler Gundelfinger singled to right field, scoring McDaniel.
The Pacers held on to secure the 14–8 win and take the series opener on Friday.
The series continues Saturday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
