HARDEEVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team opened its final series of the season against Middle Georgia on Friday. The Knights used a seven-run third inning to take control and never trailed again, going on to defeat the Sand Sharks 15–10.
The Sand Sharks were led offensively by Noah Campbell and Nicholas Barcelo, who each recorded three hits. Campbell added four RBIs, while Cooper McDaniel drove in two runs and collected two hits. Kris Levensteins reached base four times, and Terry Dean, Levensteins, and Jon Davis each scored twice.
On the mound, Braden Welch pitched three innings and struck out seven batters, while Asher Western added a scoreless inning for USCB.
After a scoreless first inning, the Sand Sharks struck first. Levensteins delivered an RBI single to left field after Davis walked, stole second, and scored to give USCB a 1–0 lead.
The Knights responded with a seven-run third inning. After a hit-by-pitch to start the frame, an RBI triple and RBI single gave Middle Georgia a 2–1 lead. A sacrifice fly and another RBI single extended the lead to 4–1, and a second RBI triple followed by an RBI single capped the inning at 7–1.
Campbell helped USCB answer with a solo home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 7–2 after three innings. In the fourth, the Sand Sharks closed the gap to 7–4 following an RBI double by Campbell that scored Levensteins and Raeder McIntire. McDaniel added an RBI groundout to make it 7–5.
Both teams traded runs in the fifth inning, but Middle Georgia maintained a three-run advantage until McIntire drew a bases-loaded walk to bring USCB within two at 8–6.
The score held until the eighth, when a run scored on a wild pitch pushed the Knights' lead to 9–6. Middle Georgia then broke the game open in the ninth, scoring six runs on two RBI walks, an RBI triple, and an RBI single to extend the lead to 15–6.
The Sand Sharks mounted a late rally in the bottom of the ninth. Barcelo delivered an RBI single and later scored on another RBI single by Campbell. After a walk and a fielder's choice, USCB cut the deficit to 15–10, but a groundout ended the comeback attempt.
USCB will continue the series on Saturday, April 25, with the second game scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Richard Gray Sports Complex, along with Senior Day recognition.
