Rapid City, SD- The University of South Carolina Beaufort Lady Sand Sharks moved up one spot to finish 7th at the 2010 NAIA Women's Golf National Championship. The Sand Sharks missed last year's cut for Nationals but one spot, but this year they came out swinging to earn an at-large bid and finish their second season in history in the top ten in the NAIA.
Led by Sophomores
Brittany Cheek and
Sophie Henke, the Sand Sharks shot a final round score of 320 with a four day total of 1,279. British Columbia posted 1,224 and edged Oklahoma City by seven shots for the title.
Brittany Cheek and
Sophie Henke finished tied for 20th overall. Cheek,
Adriana Saavedra and
Kaitlin O'Sullivan all shot 79 on Friday, while Henke carded an 83 and
Kelli Nakano shot 84. O'Sullivan also finished second in the long-drive contest with a 255-yard drive.
The Lady Sand Sharks 7th place finish matched the USCBs men's golf teams' finish in the 2009 tournament, which was their first appearance. Hopefully the women's golf can continue to follow the success of the men's programs and finish in the top five next season.
Adrianna Saavedra received honorable mention to the 2010 NAIA Women's Golf All-American Team, while
Sophie Henke and Sally Woodhead were both named to the 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Women's Golf Scholar-Athletes.
