Women’s Golf Opens Play at Highly-Competitive DI Terrier Intercollegiate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Playing among 16 DI teams, the USCB women's golf team opened play on Monday at the highly-competitive DI Terrier Intercollegiate at the Carolina Country Club. 

Day One Highlights

Playing against 16 NCAA DI teams, USCB is in 15th place and is ahead of SoCon and Big South Conference members. As a team, USCB is 60-over 636 and holds a two-stroke lead on Presbyterian and a 33-stroke advantage on The Citadel.

Ashleigh Mead is pacing the Sand Sharks, as the sophomore shot identical 6-over 78s in the first and second rounds. Overall, she penciled six birdies and 20 pars on Monday. After 36 holes, she is tied for 51st with eight other golfers - golfers from Winthrop, Lipscomb, Western Carolina, Appalachian State, Wofford, Eastern Kentucky and UNC Asheville. 

Three strokes back of her teammate is junior Kayla Ramsey at 15-over 159. Ramsey was lights out in the first round, where she etched a 3-over 75. In the opening round, the Centerville, Ohio native collected four birdies and eight pars. She struggled in the second round shooting 12-over 84, as she now sits in a six-way tie for 66th.  

Cassie Tasney is one stroke back of Ramsey at 16-over 160. The Pickerington, Ohio native shot a 13-over 85 to open the day, but she was stellar in the second round by shaving off 10 strokes - 3-over 75. She was even keel most of the second round, as she posted 13 pars and two birdies.

Alejandra Rodriguez and Kate Dickerson also competed on Monday. Rodriguez leads the duo in 86th place, while Dickerson sits in 88th. Dickerson made huge improvements from the first to second round by shaving off 21 strokes (99 to 78).

Rylea Marcum of Eastern Kentucky is 6-under 138, which is the best in the 90-person field. Lipscomb has three golfers to round out the top 4.

The Bison lead the tournament by six strokes, as they are 2-under 574. EKU is 4-over 580, as the Colonels hold an 11-stroke lead on USC Upstate. 

What's Next?

USCB will conclude the Terrier Intercollegiate on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. The Sand Sharks will be paired with Tennessee Tech and Appalachian State.
