Sand Sharks Battle With New Rival, Fall to USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. - After it was announced that USCB would be making the jump to NCAA Division II and joining the Peach Belt Conference, many circled October 5 on the calendar, as it was the first contest against the Sand Sharks' newest rival, the USC Aiken Pacers.

USCB fell to its new rival, 1-0, at the Pacer Pit in Aiken Wednesday afternoon.

Inside the Box Score

Mari Kalvatn - three shots on goal

Adrianna Martin - one shot on goal

Emily Worrell - 90 minutes, 10 saves, one goal allowed

How it Happened

Both defenses were on display in the opening period, as neither team could break into the score column. USCB had a number of scoring opportunities, racking up six corner kicks and taking seven shots, though only two were on goal. One of the best chances for USCB to score came in the 19th minute when Kalvatn had an open look at goal, but the attempt was saved by the Pacer goalkeeper.

Worrell made six saves in the first 45 minutes.

Just two minutes into the second half the Pacers' Baylea Payne got past USCB's defense and scored the lone goal of the match.

Kalvatn took a shot with just four minutes left, but it was saved by the Aiken goalkeeper.
