Ciric puts together solid tournament, USCB finishes 15th in Hartwell

HARTWELL -- Powered by a pair of strong showings from Jan Ciric (-1 212) and Ellis Bright (E 213), the USCB men's golf team (+17 869) placed 15th out of 20 schools at the Cateechee Fall Invitational in Hartwell, GA.

Ciric followed up a solid 1-over 72 in round one with a scorching-hot second round on Monday, firing an impressive 3-under 68. After a consistent front nine, Ciric caught fire on the back half, recording birdies on the 10th, 12th, and 15th holes while staying bogey-free to polish off the excellent round. He cooled off a little on Tuesday, but still matched his first-round total with another 1-over 72, making birdies on two of his first three holes of the day to earn a top-25 finish at T24.

Ellis Bright was right behind for the Sand Sharks, placing in T28 thanks to an excellent 4-under 67 final round. Bright fought back after a slow start in round one, stringing together three birdies from holes 12-15 to recover and post a 1-over 72. An early double-bogey on the par-five fifth derailed his second round to a 3-over 74, but the freshman saved his best 18 holes for Tuesday. Bright played lights-out golf from start to finish, recording five birdies and just a single bogey en route to a Sand Shark-best 67.

Freshman Nikolai Holme (+8 221) turned in a solid performance at Cateechee, recording back-to-back tallies of 74 before closing with a 2-over par 73. Despite a tumultuous fifth hole during round one, Holme notched an eagle on the par-five third hole alongside four birdies in a rollercoaster front nine at 1-over 38 before carding a 2-over back half. Holme turned on his best game in Tuesday's closing round, firing a 2-under 35 on the front nine with birdies on the par-three second and par-4 ninth. After a rough stretch midway through the back nine, Holme ended with a birdie on the 18th for a final round 73, finishing the event in a tie for 72nd.

Aaron Williams (+10 223) rebounded from a slow start on Monday, bouncing back from an opening 78 to shoot a 73 and 1-over 72 in his final two rounds of the event. Williams turned in a strong even-par back nine on his second round Monday to complete a 2-over 73 and kept the momentum going into Tuesday. Despite posting back-to-back bogeys on the fourth and fifth holes, Williams was bogey-free the rest of the way and added a birdie on the 12th for a clean back nine and a 1-over 72 on the round to conclude at T81.

Cristofer Hammar (+15 228) finished off the Sand Shark lineup, posting scores of 74 and 75 on his final two rounds after opening the event with a 79.

North Georgia (-37 815) took the team championship with a 16-shot victory over runner-up LMU, but LMU's Max Reynolds (-15 198) edged Ethan Day by two shots for the individual crown.

USCB is back at it on Oct.16-17 for the Hurricane Invitational in Albany, Ga., hosted by Georgia Southwestern State.
