DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - With a jaw-dropping 5.97m jump in the women's long jump, senior Maisonne Jones headlined the first day for USCB track and field at the Peach Belt Conference Outdoor Championships on Thursday, as she won the event as well as posting the second-longest mark in the NAIA this year. Â
Field Highlights
Jones cruised to USCB's first-ever Peach Belt Conference individual victory in the women's long jump. The senior jumper bested the runner-up by 0.33m with her mark of 5.97m. The 5.97m jump hit a personal best for the Sand Shark and is the second-longest jump in outdoor track and field this year in the NAIA - only 0.03m off from Myesha Hall of Truett-McConnell. In the DII ranks, Jones would have the 23rd-longest mark at the NCAA level. Aniah Wright also competed in the event and collected a mark of 5.00m and finished seventh. De'Andra Brown and Algeria Scott jumped and placed 11th and 13th, respectively.Â
On the men's side of the long jump, USCB had Jordan Rivers and Ramon White compete. Rivers edged his teammate by one spot with a mark of 6.17m, while White placed 12th at 5.79m.Â
In the men's pole vault, Steven Nesbitt finished in the middle of the pack (sixth) with a height of 3.90m. Zach Markow also competed and posted a height of 3.30m.Â
Track Highlights
With 17 men in the 100m prelims, Nesbitt earned a qualifying mark to punch his ticket to the finals on Friday. He placed seventh with a time of 10.98 and edged the final qualifier by 0.02 seconds. White and Michael Johnson also ran and posted 11.35 and 11.48 times, respectively.Â
On the women's side of the 100m, Jones also punched her ticket to the finals on Friday with her quick time of 12.35. She finished in fourth and was just 0.13 seconds from moving into the top-3.
Two more Sand Sharks also advanced into the finals of their respective events (400m hurdles) in Wright and LeeAisha Ford. In the women's 400mH, Wright paced the duo with a time of 1:10.82 time to finish in fifth. Ford clocked a 1:12.37 to slot in seventh place, as both will run in the finals on Friday.
What's Next?
The second and final day of the Peach Belt Conference Championships will begin at 8 a.m. with the men's 5k. On the field side, it commences at 10 a.m. with the men's and women's shot put.Â
