USCB take momentum into contest with Bearcats

BLUFFTON -- After picking up its first Peach Belt Conference win of the season on Saturday versus Clayton State, the USCB women's basketball team aims to bring that same momentum into Wednesday's action against the Lander Bearcats in Greenwood.

"We're going to prepare the same way," head coach Sharon Versyp said following the vcitory over the Lakers. "We just kept pushing each other in practice and if we can really set the tone that's going to make us better."

The Sand Shark's win over the Lakers was fueled by the return of fifth-year senior, Sheridan Bostic. The Pflugerville, Texas native was lights out from beyond the arc in her first action since November. She went 7-for-9 from three-point range while also grabbing a rebound and dishing out an assist. Bostic's presence was immediately felt as she began the day knocking down six consecutive triples before her first miss.

The three-point scoring has been something Beaufort missed during the early part of this season.

"Every time the ball goes in, I feel better," Bostic said post-game. "I'm a shooter, so I'm going to keep shooting, but once you see the ball go through the hoop it's a huge relief."

A relief it was for USCB. Prior to Saturday's contest the Sand Sharks had made only 21 three-pointers all season and no more than six in a single game.

Last season in the two meetings between the Sand Sharks and Bearcats, Lander took both games 56-41 in January and then 86-57 the following month.

The Bearcats come into play on a four-game winning streak and are 2-0 in conference play after defeating Georgia Southwestern and USC Aiken.

Shcira Fowles leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.0 points per game and put together a strong performance against the Hurricanes on Saturday dropping 28 points and pulling down seven boards with five assists in the 79-75 win. Three other Bearcats are scoring in double figures and as a team Lander is averaging 79 points per game.

"Lander is just another opponent, but they are extremely tough," Versyp said. "They are a great rebounding team, that is the key to them. But we need to we've got to keep doing what we do and worry about ourselves."

Wednesday's matchup is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. from inside Finnis Horne Arena and can be seen live on the PBC Sports Network.
