"Play with an edge," Sand Sharks square off with Lander Wednesday

BLUFFTON -- USCB's men's basketball team quickly righted the ship after a tough loss to begin 2025 by knocking off Clayton State Saturday evening. The victory improved the Sand Sharks to 9-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.

It was redshirt sophomore Hudson Norton's night as he put together a strong outing, scoring 23 points and pulling down nine boards in the victory. Dominic Eason was the other Sand Shark in double figures, scoring 14 points.

"Love it," head coach Ron Fudala said after the win over Clayton State. "When I've got guys like Hudson and everyone else in the locker room it makes my job easy. These guys are buying in. They're learning. We have ups and downs, but when we have a growth mindset, the sky's the limit."

It's been an impressive start for Beaufort in its second season beginning the season a perfect 6-0 before its first loss, but the Sand Sharks bounced back with two more wins prior to opening Peach Belt play against Augusta before the holiday break. USCB suffered a nine-point loss to the Jags and a 22-point loss to Fayetteville State on Jan. 2nd, but the win against the Lakers kept them in the top-10 of the Southeast Regional Poll at number eight. The Sand Sharks have been ranked as high as seventh in the polls while also receiving votes nationally in the NABC poll.

As a team, USCB sports a 89.3 scoring average while pulling down 35.8 rebounds per game. Offensively three players are scoring in double-figures led by senior Kenney Gaines with 12.2 PPG. Alejando Ralat and Kevaughn Price have 10.6 and 10.5 averages respectively while Nolan Paladugu and Eason are closing in on that double-figure mark with just over nine points per game for both of them.

After opening the season with back-to-back losses, Lander evened their record and moved above the .500 mark with a three-game winning streak over Converse, Winston-Salem, and then picking up its first PBC victory of the year over USC Aiken. The Bearcats picked up two more wins before the holiday break and opened the 2025 portion of its schedule with a 75-73 win over Georgia Southwestern. Noah Dunn leads the Bearcats offensively, scoring 17 points per game while Inady Legiste and Dominic Stanford are posting more than 13 points per game.

"I think Lander is one of, if not the best team in the league," Fudala said. "So we need to prepare with an edge. That's the key. We're going to work on offense, we're going to work on defense, and we're going to put a game plan in. If we can do those three things with an edge we're going to give ourselves the best chance to win."

Tipoff with the Bearcats is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside Finis Horne Arena in Greenwood. Fans can follow along with live state or watch live from the PBC Sports Network.
