BLUFFTON -- The 2024-25 women's basketball season was one defined by two words; Grit and Growth. But there is one Saturday night in February that stands out above the rest.
In only their second season of competition, USCB may not have piled up a ton of wins, but they did deliver one of the most electric and memorable moments in the program's short history, a thrilling 72-69 victory over Georgia Southwestern.
For the first time ever, Beaufort hosted a weekend night game inside the Cove, and the home crowd didn't disappoint. Students, athletes, and Lowcountry locals packed the stands and created a high-energy environment that fueled the Sand Sharks throughout the contest.
Coming off a confidence-boosting win against Lander just days before, USCB came into the night with momentum. But few expected the fireworks that followed, especially considering the Hurricanes had won by 37 earlier in the season. This time, the script flipped.
Sheridan Bostic's early three-pointer helped USCB take their first lead midway through the first quarter. Then it was Lydia Gattozzi who ignited the Cove with 11 of the team's 13 points during a pivotal stretch in the second quarter. At halftime, USCB held a eight-point edge.
Georgia Southwestern showed their championship pedigree in the third, clawing back with a 21-16 run. The fourth quarter was a defensive battle, but with the Sand Sharks trailing late, Janiyah Heyward delivered a play that will live in program lore—slashing through the Hurricanes' defense, finishing through contact, and sinking the free throw to tie the game at 64 and force overtime.
In the extra period, USCB struck first. The Hurricanes fought back to even things up, but with seconds left, it was Taniyah Bowman who provided the dagger. Her and-one conversion gave Beaufort a 71-69 lead, and the Sand Shark defense stood tall to seal the upset victory.
The eruption from the crowd and the emotion on the court said it all—this was a defining win for a program still building its foundation in one of the nation's most competitive DII conferences.
