BLUFFTON, SOUTH CAROLINA — The University of South Carolina Beaufort Athletics Department partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of the Lowcountry on the morning of Saturday, August 22nd. Hosted on USCB's Bluffton campus, the event was full of fun, games, and activities led by Alison Owen, Assistant Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Welfare and Community Engagement.
"USCB Athletics is proud to serve the Boys and Girls Club of the Lowcountry," stated Alison Owen. "Connecting our Sand Sharks student-athletes with our local youth builds meaningful relationships and can inspire the next generation. We're excited to continue our partnership and be involved in many more events in the future! #FinsUp"
The mission of the Boys & Girls Club is to "enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens."
Mandy Parson, President and CEO of the Boys and Girls club stated, "This is a wonderful example of what can happen when our community comes together to create meaningful experiences for our Club kids. We are incredibly grateful to the USCB student-athletes for sharing their time, energy, and talents with our Club members during field day." Parson continues, "Their enthusiasm and positive example made this a truly memorable day for our Club kids, while allowing them to try new activities, build confidence, and see firsthand what is possible when they set goals and work as a team. Partnerships like this are what make our community stronger and help to inspire our future leaders."
There were 221 Sand Shark Student-Athletes, plus 20 coaches, and Administrators who came together to give back to the Lowcountry and spend time with members of the Boys & Girls Club. All 13 athletic programs were represented as both group leaders and station directors. The Sand Shark's taught BGC members how to play and enjoy a variety of sports and activities; while building their confidence forward.
The kids participating in the event were divided into groups that rotated through different activities. The morning included stations that represented each sport at USCB. A few of the stations included: basketball, soccer, wiffleball, and several other games designed to encourage teamwork, positive competition, and fun.
The event concluded with lunch and an awards ceremony; providing an opportunity for the student-athletes and members of the Boys & Girls Club to celebrate the event and all accomplishments together.
