SILVIS, IL-In what was described by many at the TPC Deere Run course as a wet, blustery and brutal day, the Sand Sharks golf team continued their march to an NAIA National Golf Championship on Thursday shooting a team score 312 for a 54 hole total of 898 and are only two strokes behind the tournament co-leaders Oklahoma City and Malone. Oklahoma Christian is tied with USCB in third place. The original field of 29 teams was cut to 18 teams after Thursday's round. The championships will conclude Friday with the final 18 holes.
“Our goal is still to win. It's still is anybody's game,” said Coach Shane LeBaron as the team was driving back to the hotel to have dinner and dry out.
George Thacker is in 9th place individually after shooting a third round of 77. His three day total is 221.
Chris Lane and
Jon Pannone are both tied for 23rd place with 225 totals. Pannone had the best USCB round of the day on Thursday with a 75.
Jack Bingham scored an 81 for a 231 total while
Luke McClellan had an 87 for a 236 54 hole score. Only one individual, Aaron Ahrendson of Grand View shot under par for the day while he and his teammates were the only team to score under 300. Grand View is in fifth place, three shots behind the Sand Sharks.
Looking forward to Friday's final round, LeBaron summed up his thoughts saying, “Two shots is nothing in college golf. The final 18 holes should be really interesting.”
