KIAWAH ISLAND, SC-The USCB men's golf team finished second in their first tournament of the fall season as Barton College defeated the Sand Sharks by two strokes. USCB had a second round total of 291 to go with their opening 293 giving the Sand Sharks a 36 hole total of 584. First round leader Georgia College and State University came home in third position just one shot behind USCB. There were 21 teams entered. The tournament was held at 6873 yard par 72 Cougar Point Course on Kiawah Island.
The NAIA fourth ranked Sand Sharks were led by senior
George Thacker who shot a second round 73 to finish at one over par for the tournament with a 143 shot total. Thacker finished in a tie for third. Sophomore
Luke McClellan shot identical 73's for each of the two days for a 146 total.
Jon Pannone had the Sand Shark's best round of the day at even par 72 to finish at 147.
Chris Lane rebounded from an opening 76 shooting a one over par 73 on day two for a 149.
Jack Bingham was the fifth USCB golfer in the mix and posted scores of 75 and 82 for a 157 total.
“This was an excellent sign for the beginning of the season,” commented Coach
Chris Cuneo. “While there are still a lot of things we can work on to improve, the team played hard and really grinded out there. I am really proud of them for the first time out.”
The Sand Sharks will next be in action September 19th and 20th as they travel to Lake Wales, FL for 17th Annual Webber Fall Invitational.
