NORTH MIAMI, Fla. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team suffered a heart-breaking defeat Sunday, falling 2-1 in double overtime against Sun Conference rival Johnson & Wales.Â
Wildcats freshman Desiree Rudnick scored the game-winner in the final minute of the second overtime to claim the critical three points. Â
The Sand Sharks (4-6, 0-2 TSC) struck first, as sophomore Shannon Blair scored her second goal of the season with a header off a cross from Alexandria Radue in the ninth minute, but Sara Troulliot evened the score 11 minutes later.
"We started off strong and sent a quick message," USCB coach Ed Heberling said. "It was a brilliant goal and just what we needed to start the match. Unfortunately, like at Brewton-Parker last weekend, we rested and JWU came back and attacked us the rest of the half."
It remained tied for nearly 90 minutes, as neither team was able to break through in the second half or the first 10-minute overtime period. USCB played the entirety of overtime at a disadvantage after defender Poppy Miller was sent off in the 89th minute, but they gave up only one shot in extra time before Rudnick's game-winner.Â
"This team is full of so much potential and we have flashes of brilliance," Heberling said. "Once we accept the fact that we need to play whistle to whistle and that our effort directly impacts the outcome, we will be successful."
The Sand Sharks don't have long to pull together — they face rival SCAD Savannah for a key conference match at 1 p.m. Saturday. The game marks Homecoming for USCB.Â
"This team knows what needs to happen," Heberling said. "I anticipate a high-energy, focused and determined week of training that will get us on track in conference play."Â
