The USCB women's soccer team looks to carry some momentum into the postseason and perhaps improve its seeding for the upcoming Sun Conference Tournament when the Sand Sharks travel to Webber International for their regular-season finale Friday afternoon.
USCB has clinched a berth in the seven-team Sun Conference Tournament but could still finish anywhere from fourth through seventh in the league standings depending on the results over the next five days. The Sand Sharks currently sit fifth with 14 points, two points ahead of St. Thomas (12 points, 1 game remaining) and two behind SCAD Savannah (16 points, 2 games remaining).
The Sand Sharks are coming off their highest-scoring output of the season in a 6-0 victory over Warner in which six different players scored goals – all in the second half. USCB has earned at least one point in six of its last eight games.
With 36 goals this season, USCB has matched the single-season program record set in 2012. The Sand Sharks have allowed 30 goals and have a chance to break that record as well – the fewest they have allowed in a season is 41 in 2013.
Webber International traditionally has been a tough opponent for USCB, as the Warriors lead the all-time series 4-1, but the Sand Sharks claimed a 4-3 victory last year at Fin Land. The Warriors have lost three straight matches and are winless in their last five contests, scoring only one goal over that span.
FIN FACTS
• Assistant coach Mike Manning will lead the Sand Sharks in Friday's match, as head coach Ed Heberling did not make the trip. Heberling and his wife, USCB softball coach Laura Heberling, welcomed their first child early Thursday morning with the birth of a healthy baby boy.
• With two goals against Thomas, junior F Hayley Pina broke her own single-season program records for goals (10) and points (24). Pina also is USCB's career leader for points (57), goals (22) and assists (13).
• USCB won its first two road games to start a season and is 4-2 away from home after winning at Ave Maria on Sept. 24, tying the school record for road wins in a season set in 2012 and matched in 2013.
• The Sand Sharks have outshot the opposition in 14 of their 17 games this season and have held a double-digit edge in 10 of those matches. USCB has allowed five or fewer shots on goal 10 times and has permitted five or fewer total shots six times.
• Fifteen different players have scored goals and three more have registered assists for the Sand Sharks. Pina (10), senior F Taylor Superior (4), senior MF Sam Satterlee (3), freshman F Felicia Alpenmyr (3), freshman F Anna Gignilliat (3), sophomore MF Brittney Neser (2), senior F Cameron Croney-Clark (2), and junior MF Karen Pimentel (2) each have scored multiple goals.
• USCB opened the season with back-to-back shutouts – the first consecutive clean sheets since the Sand Sharks recorded consecutive 1-0 wins over St. Andrews and Southeastern in October 2013. The Sand Sharks have five shutouts on the season, matching the program record set in 2012 and tied in 2013.
