BLUFFTON, S.C. - With the 2020-21 season nearing, USCB's Director of Athletics Quin Monahan announced the addition of Kelly McCombs to the staff, as she will serve as the athletic department's team dietitian.
"We're excited to welcome Kelly McCombs to the Sand Shark team as our department Team Dietitian, said Monahan.
"Knowing her passion for health, along with her love of USCB Athletics and our student-athletes, Kelly will be a tremendous asset to our program. Effectively focusing on the health and wellness of our athletes is of paramount importance, especially as we pursue our mission of developing Champions and Leaders. Kelly has been a Sand Shark fan and supporter for many years, and we are happy to now introduce her an official member of the Athletics family!"
McCombs is a registered and licensed Dietitian with a Master of Science in Human Nutrition from The Ohio State University. McCombs has had an eclectic career, working as university faculty, certified diabetes educator, medical nutrition therapist, recipe and menu reviewer, consultant dietitian and speaker.
McCombs is currently a Senior Instructor and Academic Advisor at USCB, splitting her time between the Departments of Hospitality Management and Public Health and teaching a variety of online and face-to-face nutrition and food courses. She has also been a part of the Rising Tide Program with USCB Athletics since 2019.
"Since my start at USCB almost 10 years ago, I have provided nutrition resources and counseling for some individual student-athletes, said McCombs. "However I am really excited about this new opportunity for me to work as part of a team with our coaches, staff and student-athletes. It is awesome, and honestly fun to watch, how even small changes in the quality, quantity and timing of foods and hydration can improve how someone feels, performs and recovers."
When McCombs is not working or attending athletic events, you can find her at the beach with family and friends, or spending time outside with her dog. After a break in the schedule due to COVID19 restrictions, she is looking forward to returning to Dragon Boat Beaufort team racing and festivals.
