RESULTS
BIRMINGHAM, Ala - Behind Maisonne Jones' NAIA Standard performance and a first-place finish in the men's DMR, the USCB men's and women's track and field teams competed in its first meet in 2023 at the KMS Invitational on Sunday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. 
Field Highlights
Headlining the field events for USCB came in the women's long jump when Jones finished second in the event and hit a NAIA B standard in the event. Out of 22 participants, Jones earned a silver medal with a leap of 5.59m. 
In the women's weight throw, Allayah Bryan finished in the middle of the pack in eighth. She made a throw of 11.57m. 
Track Highlights
In her first first track event of the KMS Invitational, Jones qualified for the semifinals in the women's 60m after posting a time of 8.04. In her semifinal race, Jones slotted in 12th place out of 25 with a mark of 8.03.
In the women's 60m hurdles, De'Andra Brown posted an impressive time of 10.32. The rookie finished in 12th out of 22 sprinters.
For USCB's lone win at the meet, the Sand Sharks easily won the men's distance medley relay. Consisting of Eli Smith, Augustis Frasier, Jay King and Travis Patten, the four Sand Sharks bested Huntingdon by 23 seconds with a time of 12:29.93. 
In the first middle distance event (400m), Michael Johnson and Frasier represented USCB on the men's side. Johnson finished 13th with a time of 54.77, and Frasier placed 15th with a time of 55.53. 
On the women's side of the 400m, Aniah Wright, Riley Edwards and Mercedes Davis all ran. Wright paced the trio, as she finished in 15th place at 1:06.24. Edwards and Davis slotted in 20th and 22nd places - respectively. 
Jacob Mitchell clocked a respectable time in the men's 800m. The sophomore distance runner finished 14th with a mark of 2:05.51. Teammate Smith finished 31st at 2:32.68.
Transitioning to the men's one mile, Mitchell and King ran. Mitchell finished eighth out of 33 runners with a mark of 4:29.96. King earned 22nd, as he posted a time of 4:50.94. 
USCB sent out a trio of sprinters to compete in the men's 200m. Johnson led the Sand Sharks in 22nd place with a time of 24.38. Ramon White and Marquis Sparks also ran. White clocked a 24.77, and Sparks earned a 24.93.

The Sand Sharks will return to action from Feb. 3-4, as USCB travels to South Carolina to participate in the South Carolina Invitational.
