Box Score BLUFFTON — Mari Kalvatn did something few players have the opportunity to do, and then energized a frenzied crowd at the Fin Land Field Saturday as the 5th year senior continued to make history by scoring her 50th career goal and then added number 51 just eight minutes later as USCB wrapped up a perfect home stand, defeating Albany State 7-2.
For Kalvatn, the number of goals is nice, however, she gives all the credit to her teammates.
"To score 50 goals, I'm super happy of course, it feels great," Kalvatn said. "But I wouldn't have been able to accomplish this milestone without my teammates. It's Synne (Bye-Andersen) and Kristin (Beltestad), it's (former teammate) Lexi (Kaeser), and plenty of others with the assists. I might be the one scoring the goals, but it truly is an entire team effort with those sending in great balls and how we play as a whole."
It was only a matter of time before the Stavanger native found the back of the net. Beaufort controlled the opening minutes of the half to spread the Ram's defense out and begin to create opportunities. After her first shot was blocked by Albany State's goalkeeper Daphne's Estrada, Kalvatn picked up a cross from Bye-Andersen and sent it beyond Estrada's reach to put the Sand Sharks up 1-0.
"An overall solid performance," said coach Jay Harris. "A part from a 20-minute spell we controlled the game and executed well. There are lessons to be learnt in every game regardless of the result and we will definitely improve off of this."
The Sand Sharks continued to keep the pressure on ASU's defense as Bye-Andersen, Savanna Page and Anna Wandrie all produced scoring chances but were denied by Estrada. In the 15th minute, Kalvatn dribbled through the Ram's defense and blasted a shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net to put USCB up 2-0.
Beaufort's aggressive play continued as Page scored goal number three of the day with help from Kalvatn and Wandrie. The Houston native connected with Bye-Andersen in the 26th minute to give her two goals and make it 4-0 Sand Sharks. With the half winding down Marcela Shatouny stole the ball just before midfield and sprinted past Albany State's defense and punched in her fourth goal of the year, putting Beaufort up 5-0 at the half.
Period number two started just as the first ended, with USCB being the aggressors, creating four scoring opportunities within the first seven minutes. But the Rams picked up the pace scoring twice within a two minute span. Reilley Bain battled through the Sand Shark's defense and she found the back of the net, sending a ball past Emily Worrell and Jordyn Keene did the same after receiving a pass from Payton Johnson.
The score remained the same for the next 17 minutes until Jenny Hesby scored her first collegiate goal following a loose ball Estrada saved and she put it away to make it 6-2. Just nine seconds later she scored her second. Eva Kristjansdottir brought the ball through the defense and passed it to Bella Esteves and Hesby came streaking through to put it back to a five-goal game.
"It was important to get the win going into this week with our away matchups against Columbus and North Georgia," Harris said. "We can now focus all our efforts on Wednesday in playing one of the best teams in the country."
The Sand Sharks hit the road for its longest road trip of the year. USCB continues Peach Belt play against Columbus State on Wednesday before traveling for a non-conference contest with Talladega on Thursday. Beaufort wraps up the trip with a game against North Georgia on Saturday Oct. 7. Kickoff on Wednesday against the Cougars is scheduled for 2 p.m.
