Top Plays: Heyward runs away with PBC Freshman of the Year honors

BLUFFTON -- Janiyah Heyward's presence was felt from the opening tip-off of USCB Women's Basketball's inaugural season. At the conclusion of the season she was honored as the Peach Belt Conference's Freshman of the Year.

In the inaugural game against Morris she scored only nine points, but was a force on the boards collecting 14 rebounds. Following the second game against the Hornets she would go on to score in double-figures in the next seven games, averaging 20.4 PPG during the span, including her best performance of the season against Regent on Dec. 9 where she posted a career-best 31 points while grabbing 13 boards, earning the Peach Belt Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors; the first in program history.

As the season progressed, Heyward would continue to produce strong performances. She added nine more double-figure scoring outings while picking up two more double-doubles against Flagler (1/27) and Columbus State (2/28). For the season she averaged 13.1 points per game, while playing and starting in all 25 games totaling 756 minutes, good for 30.2 minutes per game. She racked up 6.9 rebounds per game and averaged just over one assist per game as well. Heyward led all PBC Freshman in scoring with 11.7 PPG and rebounds at 6.8. On March 6, 2024 the conference announced that Heyward had been named the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year as voted on by the leagues coaches.
