Sand Sharks Pull Out a Dramatic Win on Sunday

Nolan Fuller- Scored the Game Winning Run!
HARDEEVILLE, SC-Because of the severe weather that hit the Low Country on Saturday, the USCB baseball team had to wait until Sunday before concluding their week-end three game series with Sun Conference foe, Webber International at the Richard Gray Baseball Complex. But fans in attendance were treated to nail bitter, as the Sand Sharks pulled out a dramatic 5-4 victory over the visiting Warriors on a walk off double down the left field line by third baseman Jon Schmidt that scored pinch runner Nolan Fuller on a close play at the plate. Fuller was initially called out, but the ball squirted out of the glove of the Webber catcher, Ryan Redgidor. The win gives USCB a 25-14 record and a 12-9 record in Sun Conference play.

The Sand Sharks scored three runs in the bottom of the first as lead-off hitter David O'Neil singled, followed by walks to RJ Neal and TJ Kemp which loaded the bases. Shortstop Zack Rossetti grounded out to the pitcher scoring O'Neil before Jeremy Webb and Spencer Jackson delivered base hits to score Neal and Kemp giving USCB a quick 3-0 lead after one inning.

Meanwhile Sand Shark starting pitcher Jorge Olmo was sailing through the first four innings. But the visiting Warriors erupted for four runs in their half of the fifth inning. Webber had three consecutive singles before pinch hitter; Lance Lozan cleared the bases with a three run triple. Lozan later scored in the frame as Chad Pearce singled him home, to give the Warrior a 4-3 advantage.

The Sand Sharks tied the game in the sixth as Schmidt stroked a single. Gabe Torres was inserted into the game to pinch run. Jackson then doubled to put Sand Sharks at third and second base before pinch hitter, Dustin Britt, grounded out scoring Torres to knot the score at 4-4, setting the stage for the seventh inning heroics that gave the home standing USCB team the victory.

Sand Shark reliever, Ryan Philpott, came on in relief of Olmo with one out in the seventh and final frame and got credit for his third victory of the season. Webber reliever Zach Hile was the losing pitcher.

The Sand Sharks will have very little rest as they will be back in action on Tuesday at the Richard Gray Baseball Complex against Brewton Parker. Game time is 4:00 pm.
