HARDEEVILLE,SC-Four USCB pitchers gave up only seven hits and combined for the first ever shut out in the school's history on Tuesday as the Sand Sharks defeated Brewton Parker 5-0 at the Richard Gray Baseball Complex.
Kyle McCullough, making his second start of the season, pitched the first three innings for the Sand Sharks before giving way to
Matthew Graney who hurled another three and a third innings.
Kevin Koehn came on to pitch in the top of the seventh innings. With one out and the bases loaded, Koehn needed but one pitch as Brewton Parker's centerfielder, Chris Dykes hit a ground ball to third that was snared by Sand Shark third baseman, Zack Rossetti, who stepped on third for the forced second out and gunned a throw to first to double up Dykes. Koehn pitched a perfect eighth frame and
Ryan Kroko secured the win with a hitless ninth inning performance. Graney was credited with his second win of the season.
USCB scored their first run in the first inning as
RJ Neal continued his torrid hitting pace, lacing a long triple to centerfield. Rossetti followed with an extra base double and the Sand Sharks were up 1-0.
The home team manufactured their second run in the third frame when Corey Snowden doubled to lead off the inning. He was sacrificed to third on a
David O'Neil bunt and scored on a single by Neal.
O'Neil and Gabe Torres led off the fifth inning for the Sand Sharks with hits and later scored on rbi's by Rossetti and
Spencer Jackson. Rossetti tripled in the seventh and crossed the plate on Jackson's single which ended the scoring for USCB.
Neal led USCB's thirteen hit attack with three hits while O'Neil, Rossetti, and Jackson had two hits apiece for the Sand Sharks.
The win gives USCB a 26-14 for their initial season of baseball. They will next be in action on Thursday as they travel to Augusta, GA to take on Paine College in a 2:00 start. The next home game will be next Wednesday, (April 8th) as the Sand Sharks will play a doubleheader against Savannah State.
