CENTRAL, SC—The USCB Sand Sharks hold off Southern Wesleyan's 5 run rally Tuesday to improve their record to 27-14overall and 12-9 TSC, while the Warriors drop to 13-23 overall.
Starting pitcher Jared Campbell (3-2) led the defense in Tuesday's game keeping the Warriors scoreless through 5 innings and only allowing 1 run through a total of 7.2 innings pitched.
Sand Sharks got off to an early lead in the second, plating four runners. With two outs on a designated hitter Jeremy Webb reached on a double and scored on a single by third baseman Jon Schmidt. DeShontay Berry reached on a single, advancing Schmidt. Catcher Clay Bonds singled and advanced to second on a errant throw, plating both Schmidt and Berry.
The Sand Sharks picked up one more run in the third when RJ Neal doubled, Webb walked and Schmidt singled plating Neal, Sand Sharks up 5-0.
Catcher Clay Bonds hit his second homerun of the year to stretch the lead to 6-0 in the 4th.
DeShontay Berry scored the lone run in the 6th for the Sand Sharks when he reached on a double, stole third and scored when David O'Neil grounded out.
The Warriors picked up their first run of the game in the 6th off two singles and a sacrifice fly. They picked up their second run in the 8th off relief pitcher Kevin Koehn, on a passed ball.
The Warriors rally wasn't done, holding the Sand Sharks scoreless in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings, and scoring 3 more runs in the 9th off 3 singles a double and a sacrifice fly.
The Sand Sharks held on to win the game 7-5.
The Sand Sharks are back in action in a doubleheader Wednesday as they play host to NCAA Division One Savannah State. The first pitch will be thrown promptly at 2pm at the Richard Gray Baseball Complex in Hardeeville, SC.
