SAND SHARKS WIN OPENING BASEBALL GAME

HARDEEVILLE, SC-The USCB baseball team opened the 2010 season today at the Richard Gray Baseball Complex in Hardeeville with a convincing 14-3 win over the visiting Hawks from Shorter College. “It was a great way to start the season and we look forward to continue to improve every day,” commented Pitching Coach Michael Wallace after the game.

The Sand Sharks did not waste any time scoring. On their first inning of the young season, a pair of walks and an infield error accounted for the first run of the game. After giving up three runs to the visitors in the top half of the second frame, USCB plated three runs of their own in their half of the inning as David O'Neil's rbi single followed by a Zach Rossetti double plated two more Sand Sharks giving the home team a lead the they would never relinquish.

Meanwhile newcomer, Spencer Cromer came on to pitch in relief of starter Adam Miller in the third inning for USCB pitching five solid innings, giving up only three scattered hits while striking out five Shorter hitters.

The USCB bats again came alive in the bottom of the fifth frame as a single by Paul Cheeks and two base knocks by Spencer Jackson and Brandon Collins accounted for another pair of runs to run the score to 6-3. A three run home run by Jackson over the left field fence along with four singles in the sixth inning gave the home standing Sand Sharks five more runs making the score 11-3.

USCB scored their final three runs in the eighth inning as three walks along with a long slicing double down the right field line by Brandon Cooksey put the finishing touches on the 14-3 victory.
Reliever Ryan Kroko came on to pitch the final two frames for the Sand Sharks and retired six of the seven batters he faced.

The Sand Sharks can't rest on their laurels as they will travel to Denmark on Tuesday to face Voorhees in a double header beginning at noon.
