BLUFFTON, SC-
Bryan Lewallyn has been announced by Sand Shark Head Baseball Coach Rick Sofield as the new pitching coach/recruiting coordinator at USCB. “We are so excited to have Bryan join us at USCB,” said Sofield adding, ”He brings a wealth of baseball knowledge, energy, and experience to our program. Bryan comes from the Florida junior college ranks which will open new recruiting doors for us not only in Florida but throughout the southeast.”
Coach Lewallyn spent the past year as the pitching coach at Northwest Florida State College. Prior to his stint there, he spent the 2008 season as the pitching coach with the Pensacola Pelicans professional team of the American Association. While at Pensacola, Lewallyn worked with pitchers with previous major league experience and also had two of his players sign contracts with major league organizations. He also had the opportunity to attend the Major League Baseball scouting bureau's scout school program where he learned the process of evaluating both amateur and professional talent.
Before joining the Pelican's organization, Lewallyn was employed in the front office with the New Orleans Zephyrs, the AAA affiliate of the New York Mets. His responsibilities there were in in sales and public relations.
As a player, Coach Lewallyn was a pitcher at Pensacola Junior College from 2001-03 and was part of their 2002 state tournament team. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Central Florida. His father, Dennis, was a pitcher in the major leagues with the Dodgers, Indians, and Rangers and is currently the pitching coach with the Tennessee Smokies, the AA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.
“I am delighted to be part of the new USCB program,” said Lewallyn. “With the success they have had the past two seasons, I hope to be able to add a small piece that will get the Sand Sharks to the next level. Also, the opportunity to work with Coach Sofield is something I really look forward to.”
Lewallyn replaces Mchael Wallace who resigned in mid July to take a coaching position at East Mississippi Community College.
USCB will begin their 2011 season in a February 5th doubleheader at home against Benedict College. The Sand Sharks completed their second season in 2010 with a 39-15 record and were ranked 20th in the final NAIA national poll.
