Sand Sharks Sweep Doubleheader From Milligan (Tenn.)

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team staked ace Michael Heesch to a big lead in the opener and made the most of limited scoring opportunities in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader from visiting Milligan (Tenn.) on Saturday, winning 9-6 and 6-2 at Richard Gray Sports Complex.

Sophomore Erik Armstrong, who led the nation with six doubles entering the game, didn't add to his total of two-baggers, but he did plenty of damage. He had a sacrifice fly in the first, an RBI triple in the second and a two-run single in the third to boost his team-leading RBI total to 12.

The latter put the cap on a four-run inning and gave the Sand Sharks (7-2) a 9-0 cushion, which was plenty of breathing room for Heesch (2-0). The senior left-hander went five innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out nine. He has struck out eight or more in his past two starts.

Leadoff man Ty Main had two hits and scored three runs in the opener.

The Buffaloes (0-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead against USCB starter Adam Miller in the second game, but it didn't last long.

Senior Dom Hayes put the Sand Sharks ahead with a two-run single in the bottom of the first, and junior Terry McClinton – playing his first game for USCB – padded the cushion with a two-run homer in the second.  McClinton also added an RBI single in the sixth and stole three bases.

The Sand Sharks managed only four hits, but Miller and freshman Junior Delatorre made sure that was enough. Miller (2-1) didn't allow another run in his four innings of work, striking out seven along the way, and Delatorre gave up only one unearned run in three innings of relief for his first save.

The same two teams square off at noon Sunday to conclude the series.  Either junior right-hander Kyle McCullough or freshman right-hander Caleb Daniels will start on the mound for USCB.
