HARDEEVILLE, S.C. — With the start of conference play looming this weekend, University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball coach Bryan Lewallyn wanted to make sure as many of his pitchers as possible got enough work to stay sharp while still keeping everyone fresh enough for the weekend.
Consider it done. Seven USCB pitchers contributed to a pair of shutouts, as the Sand Sharks beat Fisher (Mass.) 3-0 and 15-0 to complete a three-game sweep Tuesday at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
The Sand Sharks (11-2) have won six straight overall and 10 straight at home, and they improved to 14-1 all-time against Fisher.
Adam Miller, Miles Galvin and Colton Rudd combined on a two-hitter in the opener for USCB. Galvin (1-0) earned the win after the Sand Sharks scored three runs in the fourth against starter Casey Reed. Rudd pitched two perfect innings for his second save.
Dom Hayes broke a scoreless tie with an RBI double to deep center, took third on the throw to the plate to try to cut down R.J. Neal and scored when the snap throw to third went into left field. The Sand Sharks added a third run in the inning on David O'Neil's RBI single.
The Falcons (0-4) didn't have any more luck in the second game, managing only four hits against Kyle McCullough, Caleb Daniels, Stephen Richards and Junior Delatorre.
McCullough (1-0) threw two scoreless innings, allowing only one hit in his first outing since starting the first game of the NAIA National Championship Opening Round in 2010. The junior missed all of last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Many of USCB's regular starters sat out the second game, and the reserves made the most of their opportunity. Second baseman Keenan Ivey was 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and an RBI, and freshman shortstop Ashly Morris went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and four RBIs.
The Sand Sharks begin Sun Conference play at 2 p.m. Friday with a single game against Southeastern. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday.
