HARDEEVILLE, S.C. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team endured a rare quiet day at the plate Tuesday, managing only five hits — all singles — and seeing their nine-game overall winning streak and their 13-game home winning streak end with a 3-1 loss to Southern Wesleyan at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
Southern Wesleyan right-hander Mark Atkins (1-1) quieted USCB's bats, limiting the Sand Sharks to one run in a complete game. He walked one and struck out three.
Freshman right-hander Caleb Daniels (1-1) suffered his first loss on the mound, allowing three runs on eight hits over four innings.
The Sand Sharks (14-3) stayed in it thanks to five innings of scoreless relief — two from left-hander Adam Miller and three from right-hander Andrew Barrineau — but they could never put together a rally against Atkins.
They pushed across one run in the eighth on Ty Main's RBI single, but a baserunning blunder ended the threat for more. And they had the tying run at first in the ninth, but Gabe Torres and Conald Mansfield hit line drives right at outfielders for the final two outs.
USCB first baseman Erik Armstrong was held hitless for the first time this season, snapping an 18-game hitting streak dating to last season.
The teams will play again at 2 p.m. today at Richard Gray Sports Complex. Senior left-hander Michael Heesch will get the start for USCB in a tune-up for this weekend's Sun Conference series at Ave Maria.
