With an average of more than seven runs per game, it stood to reason that the University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team's slump at the plate in Tuesday's loss to Southern Wesleyan wouldn't last long.
It didn't.
A day after managing only five singles while seeing their 13-game home winning streak snapped, the Sand Sharks bounced back with 13 hits in an 8-1 win Wednesday to split the series and take some momentum into a Sun Conference series at Ave Maria this weekend.
Among the 13 hits were a pair of home runs — a three-run blast by Erik Armstrong in the four-run third inning and a two-run shot by Keifer Youmans in the eighth.
Youmans also had an RBI single in the sixth among his three hits, and Dom Hayes came off the bench to deliver two hits, including an RBI double to open USCB's scoring in the third.
Senior left-hander Michael Heesch struck out the side and allowed a run in the first inning in a tune-up for Friday's start at Ave Maria, then handed it over to the Sand Sharks' bullpen.
Four relievers combined for eight scoreless innings, with Miles Galvin (3-0) throwing four innings of two-hit ball for the win.
The Sand Sharks (15-3, 3-0 Sun Conference) will travel to Florida to face the Gyrenes (8-11, 5-4) at 2 p.m. Friday, then wrap up the series with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday.
