Sand Sharks Can't Hold Off Late Rally, Fall At Flagler To Snap Winning Streak

Box Score

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. – A big sixth inning put the University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team in position to earn its fifth consecutive win, but the bullpen was unable to hold on Wednesday, as NCAA Division II Flagler College rallied to beat the visiting Sand Sharks 5-4 at Drysdale Field.

USCB (5-2) took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on RBI singles by R.J. Neal, Weldon Smith and Ty Main, but the Saints (2-2) tied it in the bottom of the inning and scored the winning run in the eighth.

Catcher Kyle Foti was the offensive star for Flagler. He hit a two-run home run in the fourth to give the Saints a 2-1 lead, and doubled to lead off the eighth and scored the winning run on John Sgromolo's sacrifice fly.

Sophomore left-hander Alex Graham (1-1) took the loss, allowing his first run in 8 2-3 innings this season on Sgromolo's sacrifice fly. USCB starter Miles Galvin allowed two runs over four innings, and Matthew Graney and Andrew Barrineau each allowed a run in one inning of relief.

Sophomore Erik Armstrong extended his hitting streak to nine games dating to last season with a single in the first and added a sacrifice fly in the third. Armstrong is the only USCB player who has hit safely in every game this season. Senior Gabe Torres had a hit in each of the first six games, but he was 0-for-4 Wednesday to snap his 11-game hitting streak.

The Sand Sharks return home to Richard Gray Sports Complex for a three-game series with Milligan (Tenn.) this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and a single game at noon Sunday. Senior left-handers Michael Heesch and Adam Miller are expected to start Saturday's doubleheader.

The USCB softball team will open its inaugural season with a home doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday against Wesleyan College from Macon, Ga.
