Sand Sharks Split Doubleheader At Brewton-Parker

Senior 2B Gabe Torres went 5-for-6 in the doubleheader to lead USCB's offense

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. — Each team squandered an early lead, and each pulled off a comeback victory Tuesday, as the University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team split a doubleheader at Brewton-Parker College.

The Sand Sharks (21-7) rallied from a four-run deficit to win the first game 6-5, but they couldn't hold onto a five-run lead in the nightcap, falling 7-6.

USCB had to rally twice to win the opener. After falling behind 4-0, Ty Main's grand slam in the sixth inning tied it at 4, but the Barons regained the lead in the bottom of the inning.

The Sand Sharks scored two more in the seventh, scoring the go-ahead run on Gabe Torres' RBI single to left. Torres was the only USCB player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3.

Alex Graham (4-1) was the winning pitcher despite allowing four runs in two innings of relief, and Colton Rudd pitched scoreless seventh for his third save.

It seemed USCB would cruise to a sweep after taking a 5-0 lead in the first five innings, but the Barons were able to chip away against reliever Miles Galvin.

Brewton-Parker pulled within 6-5 going into the seventh inning, and Rudd was unable to pick up his second save of the day. The Barons tied it on Omar Artsen's RBI single up the middle, and Artsen stole two bases and scored when the throw trying to cut him down at third got away from David O'Neil.

Torres went 3-for-3 with an RBI and scored three runs to lead USCB in the second game.

The Sand Sharks travel to Grayson Stadium for a Sun Conference series against SCAD Savannah on Friday and Saturday. Friday's game is scheduled for 3 p.m., and Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon.
