Box Score
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Freshman right-hander Dylan Weber-Callahan recovered after giving up unearned runs in each of the first two innings to pitch a complete game, and SCAD Savannah rallied to beat the University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team 4-2 on Friday at Grayson Stadium, handing the Sand Sharks their second Sun Conference loss.
USCB slipped a half-game behind Embry-Riddle for the Sun Conference lead when the Eagles beat Northwood 11-4 on Friday.
The Sand Sharks (21-8, 8-2) took advantage of SCAD errors to take a 2-0 lead, scoring on
Conald Mansfield's RBI single in the first and
Ty Main's sacrifice fly in the second. But they got nothing more against Weber-Callahan, who didn't allow a hit after the fifth and retired the last seven batters he faced.
USCB was unable to take advantage of a golden opportunity in the third, failing to score despite loading the bases with one out. And
Erik Armstrong's leadoff double in the fifth went to waste when he was thrown out at the plate trying to score on
Gabe Torres' single.
The Bees (16-12, 3-5) didn't have a hit against Sand Sharks starter
Michael Heesch until the fourth, when Will Cioffi's single up the middle set off a three-run rally. A misplayed ball in center field allowed SCAD's first run, and the Bees took the lead on Jamison Sweat's two-run double.
SCAD added an insurance run in the seventh on Calvin Goodson's RBI triple down the right-field line.
The series concludes with a doubleheader scheduled for noon Saturday. Left-hander
Adam Miller and right-hander
Kyle McCullough are expected to start for USCB.
