MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team slipped to third place in the Sun Conference standings after dropping both ends of a doubleheader at St. Thomas on Saturday, losing 8-0 and 8-3.
The Sand Sharks (23-11, 10-5 Sun Conference) won the all-important first game of the series Friday night, but they never got the offense going Saturday.
St. Thomas starter Danny Sanchez threw a one-hitter in the opener, retiring 24 of 25 batters after a bumpy first inning and allowing only
David O'Neil's two-out single in the sixth.
USCB's bats showed signs of life in the nightcap, as O'Neil's RBI single,
Gabe Torres' sacrifice fly and
Keifer Youmans' RBI single helped the Sand Sharks climb out of a 3-0 hole and tie it up.
But the Bobcats (26-6, 10-4) regained the lead against USCB's bullpen, scoring three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
The Sand Sharks return home for a Sun Conference series next weekend against Northwood. The opener is slated for 4 p.m. Friday, and the series is scheduled to conclude with a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday.
