HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – An outpouring of offense powered the University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team to a 17-2 win over Northwood (Fla.) on Saturday at Richard Gray Sports Complex, but the Sand Sharks' bid for a three-game sweep of their Sun Conference opponent will have to wait until Sunday after pouring rain postponed the series finale.
The Sand Sharks (25-11, 12-5 Sun Conference) pounded 18 hits in support of starter
Adam Miller in the second game of the series, jumping to an early lead and cruising to an easy win in a game shortened to seven innings because of the 10-run rule.
David O'Neil went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and scored three runs, and
Ty Main and
Conald Mansfield each drove in three runs for USCB. Main hit his third home run of the season, a three-run shot down the right-field line in the sixth, to match
Keifer Youmans for the team lead.
The Sand Sharks scored four runs in each of the first two innings and tacked on four in the fourth and five in the sixth.
Miller (6-3) was effective in his six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out eight.
Junior Delatorre worked a perfect seventh – the freshman from Beaufort has not allowed an earned run in 14 innings this season.
The series will conclude with one game at 10 a.m. Sunday. Junior right-hander
Kyle McCullough will start on the mound for USCB, which has a one-game lead over St. Thomas for second place in the Sun Conference standings.
