DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The road to the Sun Conference baseball title perennially runs through Embry-Riddle's Sliwa Stadium.

And the University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team still has ground to make up to knock the fourth-ranked Eagles from their perch atop the conference standings, but the Sand Sharks made up some ground over the weekend by handing the Eagles their first conference series loss since 2010 against Warner.

The teams split a doubleheader Saturday, as the Sand Sharks bounced back to win the final game 9-2 after losing the first game of the twinbill 9-4. USCB won the series opener 3-1 on Friday.

It was USCB's first series win against Embry-Riddle in four tries; the Sand Sharks had won one of three games in each of the three previous series, and the Eagles have won both postseason meetings.

The Eagles (32-11, 17-4) still hold a three-game lead over the Sand Sharks, who dropped a half-game behind St. Thomas for second place in the conference after the Bobcats finished a three-game sweep of Southeastern on Saturday.

The Sand Sharks (27-13, 14-7 Sun Conference) jumped out to an early lead in Saturday's first game, staking left-hander Adam Miller to a 3-0 advantage. But the Eagles rallied to put together two big innings, scoring four in the third and four in the seventh.

It was USCB that used the big inning to its advantage in the finale, as the Sand Sharks took the lead with three runs in the second and broke it open with four in the sixth.

Ty Main's three-run triple to right field in the third brought home three unearned runs to give USCB the lead for good. Conald Mansfield's sacrifice fly in the fifth brought in another run in the fifth.

Weldon Smith, Main, David O'Neil and Dylan Nasiatka delivered consecutive run-scoring hits in the sixth, and Nasiatka drove in another run with a double in the eighth.

That was plenty of support for the pitching staff, as senior left-hander Colton Rudd shut down the Eagles over six scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.

The Sand Sharks host Brewton-Parker for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Tuesday before traveling back to Florida for a three-game Sun Conference series at Warner next weekend.
